While I was grooming my 5 y.o. mare last night after riding, I noticed some blood oozing from a small circuluar hole on her right side, about 2-3 mm in diameter. It is behind the shoulder and about half-way down her side. I had not noticed a bump there earlier that could have abscessed but I haven't groomed her myself for about 4 days. Initially, I thought that it was some kind of puncture but there is nothing sharp in her saddle or stall that could have caused something like this and she's been wearing a stable rug for the last week. She didn't seem to show any discomfort during our ride either. We put some anticeptic on the spot and today it is not discharging but the area around it is abit swollen. The groom mentioned today that my mare had had small bumps last year but I don't think any of them had burst. I have no idea what could have caused this and it seems very odd to me but I don't have much experience with horses and their ailments. Any ideas?

Hello Marcia, They can get small punctures on flat boards it seems. If it looks like a small wound that is probably what it is, no matter how unlikely. The question is how deep? That may need veterinary assesment. In the meantime check out the article on first aid and long term wound care. DrO
