West Nile Encephalomyelitis (WNE) was unknown in this country before the fall of 1999 although it has been enzootic in Europe for a long time. I suspect that it could cause extensive outbreaks in 2000, both in humans and in horses. Is there an equine vaccine and will it be available soon?

hello Joan, You are right to be worried, we are all worried about what the summer of 2000 will bring. I am afraid the answers to your question are No and No. Currently the best prevention seems to be the elimanation of standing water (see the article associated with this discussion). DrO

What is your opinion of feeding garlic to horses as a natural insect repellant?

Ineffective, you can't beat eliminating standing water and DEET. DrO

What is the latest you have heard on the West Nile Virus? A friend of mine heard/read that 3 infected crows had been found dead in New York, but other than that I haven't heard anything.

We have monitoring birds out here in NC but mum is the word so far as I have heard. It will first turn up on the evening news when it occurs. DrO

I believe there was a mention on the evening news here in Bergen County, N.J. of a dead crow. I also believe West Nile was confirmed. I know that in N.Y. they are gearing up to spray. They always seem to find the weirdos to interview that say " I'm more afraid of the spray than the bugs, after all, what's so bad about a few mosquitoes?" Gee, it's so great to live among such well - informed, head-in-the-sand, idiots.

FYI- West Nile was confirmed as the cause of death of two crows in Maryland (Howard County and Baltimore County) this week. They are spraying a 2-mile radius of both sites where the birds were found.
