I purchased a 2yo pony stallion in August who had an infrequent cough when he arrived. After breaking and riding, I noticed shortness of breath after cantering (very short distance) with a quick return to normal respers. He had URT infection in Oct. He was scoped in Jan. with the following results. Grade 3 lymphoid hyperplasia, DDSP but does correct on own, roof of pharynx does collapse slightly when air held off, mucus near oropharynx none at biforcation, Left arytnoid partial poaralysis 10%, no difference after exercise. Low dose of Ventipulmin produced great result. He is out all the time and following the heave protocol, but that doesnt seem to help. The vet thinks he could have autoimmune response from URT infection and long distance trailering stress. She wants to try nutritional changes and antiinflamatory drugs since she believes this could be a steroid withdrawal problem. This pony may have been on steroid preparation all summer for a busy show schedule. He would have been withdrawn in Aug. when I bought him. He had a big puffy, round apearancethen, and has changed to a softer, less tight look. Definatly different. Does this sound like it is a reasonable plan? Any other ideas? Thanks

Treat the lymphoid hyperplasia first: rest and antiinflammatories are the treatment of choice. Reasses when well. The DDSP and exercise intolerance may disappear when the inflammation does.

We have a 7yo Arabian mare, seems to exhibit colic symptoms after being ridden. She lays down and seems to grunt. First episode lasted about 3 hrs and now has same symptoms after riding about an hour. Ws fed her about a quart of rolled oats mixed with a quart of 10% sweet mule and horse feed. Any suggestions on what may be going on?
