Discussion on HERPES VIRUS | |

Posted on Thursday, Feb 3, 2000 - 11:57 am: I have read a few articles about Equine Herpes Virus since our gelding became inflicted with this late last fall and within a few days had to be euthanized. It was a very traumatic experience for us -- particularly my husband as it was his first horse. He was only 9 years old and we thought he would be around for many years with us to enjoy. It started with a bad cough and upper respiratory problems and within 2-3 days his back toes were dragging and that's when we called the vet. She came to examine him and during this examination had to express his bladder which was non-functional. Within the next day or two he was down more than up and really had a hard time getting himself up. He got to the point a few days later when he couldn't get up at all and we put him down. It was the hardest thing we have ever had to do.I still have a few questions. I'm wondering about my 9 year old mare who seems to have survived through this (it has been three months and she shows no signs) and after a 45 day waiting period (advised by our vet) we bought another horse who was vacinnated with rhino-flu vaccine prior to us bringing him home (10 days waiting period for that). They both seem to be fine but we still wonder about them and also, how did our gelding contract this disease? We had him for two years and wonder if he was exposed to this virus as a colt or what. We have just the two horses and they were not exposed or around other horses at all - just used for trail rides and casual riding - no stress to speak of. Anyway, if anyone has anymore information on this virus I would be most interested in learning more about it. |
