Discussion on Recurrent Uveitis | |

Posted on Tuesday, Feb 8, 2000 - 11:42 pm: This is my first attempt at posting a message so please be patient. I have a 10 year old Tenn. Walker (white) that has just been diagnosed with recurrent uveitis. His last episode lasted two weeks. We treated him with 'bute', asprin, and Dexamethasone Opth ointment in his eye twice a day. The asprin is on-going as a preventative measure. My question is about worming and antioxidants. Would Strongid C be better than paste because of immune response, and would an antioxidant supplement be helpful in supporting the immune system? Any hints on what 'triggers' an episode, and management tips you can give me will be greatly appreciated...Paula |

No I do not think Strongid C would be better, it may allow a build up of onchocerca that would be much worse during the required ivermectin treatments for bots. There is no work on antioxidants and this condition and many of the products are of questionable efficacy. Certainly supplementing VitE or C would not hurt. The triggering mechanisms are not easy to figure out, I have yet to find a pattern other than the eralier and more aggresively treated the less frequent the episodes. DrO |

Posted on Wednesday, Feb 9, 2000 - 10:07 pm: Hi Dr.OglesbyThank you for your prompt help. In regards to worming a recurrent uveitis horse, should I do it more often than 8 week intervals? I read the foram on rotating wormers and have another question...In our area, Oregon, we have been hearing vague warnings about Quest. Allerigic reactions are one of my main concerns. Do you think it is safe for me to use in rotation with Ivervectin? Tango is due for worming on the 15th of Feb. His last uveitis episode ended on the 3rd of Feb. tho I kept up the eye ointment for another 10 days. I would appreciate your thoughts as I don't want to set off another episode. Paula |

If you discover an association with deworming and reoccurence deal with it then.As long as you follow the instructions on the Quest it is very safe with a 3 times over dosage safety factor. For people with horses less than 500 lbs I recommend you premeasure the dose into a second syringe to avoid overdosage. DrO |
