Discussion on "Bone spur" in/on cervical vertebrae?

The vet was out yesterday for various chores and I mentioned the recent problem I'd noticed with my older gelding (coming 20). The last few times I've ridden him, he's been very grumpy--bucking, shying, etc., which is out of character for him. Also, he cannot flex his neck very far to the right, although he does not have this problem to the left. The vet noticed a slight swelling on the right side of his neck about half way between ears and shoulder. She thought that he might have developed a bone spur that pinches a nerve when he bends to the right side. She said I could give him bute prior to riding him again to see if this makes a difference. If this is the problem (she didn't radiograph him), is there any treatment other than surgery to make him comfortable when ridden? Is surgery for this condition feasible? Thank you.

Hello Eva,
It would depend entirely on the details of the radiograph and may even require a myelogram before answering.
