Posted on Thursday, Mar 2, 2000 - 10:28 am: A new problem, my 12 Y.O. mare has become exceedingly short of breath when ridden for just1/2 hr at a walk. This seemed to develop very suddenly. I've read the article on heaves/COPD and am afraid this is what she has. Her only other sx is a slightly runny nose, but she has no cough. My question is: the article and previous forums indicate that a cough is a primary symptom. Has anyone had a horse diagnosed with COPD without a cough? She has none. Am waiting for the vet to call me back. Thanks |

Ends up she has a fever and some type of upper resp. infection, even tho no cough, not much of a runny nose. Wasn't acting sick when I rode yesterday, but is a bit lethargic now. She may have Strangles, since it is in the area, so vet has started treatment. Oh well... |

Posted on Friday, Mar 3, 2000 - 9:44 am: Yes, there is another case at the farm and strangles is fairly common in some free-range horses in the immdediate area. My horse was vaccinated with the nasal type vaccine. My vet is calling today with results of blood tests. She's not sure its Strangles but wanted to start treatment because it is very common here (Arizona). She, too, is surprise there is no cough. Just a fever (103.2) and extreme shortness of breath when exercised lightly (before I realized she was sick). She also seems to have a sore throat, but no abcesses yet. |
