Dr O My four year old put his foot through a fence with heavy gage wire on it. The wire was really just rough edges in one little spot in a big corral and he found it. The wire is very stiff, about 1/3 inch in diameter so it did not penetrate as much as it scraped and gouged his rear foot from outside of the pastern to just below the coronet, the coronet has some deep gouges, about a 1/4 inch. In looking at the posts I was wondering if Wonder Dust is still your recommendation?. Initially, 2 days ago, we scrubbed it clean and cold hosed, dried and put Nitro furacin puffer on it. (had no spray) put on a little Bute. What would you suggest from here to maintain and avoid proud flesh? He is not lame but it was very sore to touch. He was just moved to a new place so he has been active, walking around alot which I think has kept the swelling to nil.

dear Debbie: In addition to whatever the veterinarian says for a topical agent, may I suggest covering the wound with a gauze or suitable bandaid. In humans it promotes healing. an additional benefit for your horse, it may keep the area clean

No Wonder Dust. There are better ways in the article for treatment of proudflesh. For those who can't use a hose, use scarlet oil or there is a pink topical for proudflesh i have gotten from the vet in the past, there is also a green salve called proud sof I actually like it you must follow the directions to the T. I use an old cowboy remedy myself, because my horse won't let me turn on a hose near him. I however don't apply it every day because it is VERY CAUSTIC, it slows healing I put it on maybe once a week if needed. I did have to have proudflesh removed 2 times before the solution. I do clean the wound everyday with a betadine solution, I am a firm believer that there rarely is anything better than betadine. With good wound management you shouldn't have to use much in the way of topicals unless you have a very persisten wound.

Tania, have patience I have been nursing a wound since last november it has finally gotten to a managable size and should heal before summer I hope. The horse decided since I was thinking about putting a saddle on him he should go and cut himself up again. So On To the Next Round....

I do not recommend Wonder Dust Debbie. For the proper wound care to minimize proud flesh see the following article: Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Wounds / Burns » Long Term Deep Wound Care for the treatment of proud flesh see: Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Wounds / Burns » The Treatment of Proud Flesh or Exuberant Granulation Tissue.
