Dr. O: I read your article about "EDM" wherein you mention that this affliction appears in certain "families" of horses. Can you tell me what families, or direct me to a site to do some research? A friend's (now 3 year old) Paint stallion is a "wobbler" and the cause of his problem has never been diagnosed (at one year of age he tested negative for EPM and the myelogram showed no spinal cord compression). I am concerned at this point because, although apparently surgery is the one option for treatment at this late date, my friends have a 5-week-old foal by this stud and I want to know if they should consider supplementing with Vitamin E as a preventive.

No, there has not been any work put together describing lineages, just a clinical observation that it tends to affect brothers and sisters. It is a bit of a shame that your friend chooses to stand a horse with a uncertain but possibly genetic disorder: whether wobblers or EDM. I would council them as to the pitfalls of this practice. I see that they would have little to loose by supplementing E, particularly if not on lots of green grass.
