What can anyone tell me about blood worms, such as:
Signs-what to look for
Treatment
Contagious factors
How it will affect the animals behavior
Is it something which is more active at different times of the year.
How critical can they be to a horse
Does regular worming take care of them

Blood worms are the same as strongyles and covered extensively in the Care for Horses: General Care: Deworming and Parasite Control topic.

My vet once called me back to see this horse that
had been brought in for weight loss (he was a rack
of bones). He wanted to show me what a blood worm
infessted horse looked like. WOW! We went in the
trailer to see the manure that the horse had
passed and it was filled with the short hair like
blood red worms, YUCK! I was weird a few weeks
before the 4 horses had been tube wormed with
ivermectrin. The owner went on vacation came back
in 2 weeks and the one horse had no weight on him.
Pretty drastic, the horse poped out of it fine
