My 20 year old gelding has also suddenly(since february 1999) developed a urinary problem.A scope done on him at the State vet School in March showed some possible crystalization but no actual stones.His urethra was inflammed with ulcerations on the end of his penis.He resist urinating as much as possible.He looks at his flanks as in colic but was not found to actually be colicing.He yawns and swishes his tail and sticks his tongue out with a licking manner,which all of these I have been told by a Vet are signs of low grade pain. He was given twenty Pyridium for the discomfort,a day for seven days,without much success.He was given an antibodic for 27 days,twenty per day,which seemed to help but after he was off them it has started back.A blood panel showed only amylase 5-low(25-600 normal),CPK
412 (100-300 normal),osmolatility calculated 275(280-300 normal),hematocrit31.9(32.0-50.0 normal),rbc(6.0(7.00-12.0 normal)absolute lymphs1450(150-7700 normal).My Vet did not think any of these were of any significance towards his urinary problems,so I am at a loss.

Concerning the ulcerations on the end of the penis, you should have them biopsed and cultured as squamous cell carcinoma is a possibility and early treatment will prevent spread. If they are primary infections the culture will help direct you to a better treatment. As for the behavorial changes, I cannot be sure of their significance.
