My 11 year old Clyde has a third recurring bout with Osteosarcoma in his eye. The first time the lesion was removed, the second time cryosurgery was done and the third eyelid removed. What are his options this time. THe lesion is less than 1/2 inch and in the corner of his eye . Ansley Ansley}}

Hello Ansley, I am sorry to hear of your predicament. As always the first step with any focal cancer is complete removal. I suggest a very complete exam of the area during general anesthesia with wide removal of any suspicious looking areas. Whether this is done through traditional surgery, cryosurgery, or even radiation does not matter if complete removal is achieved and this may require removal of the eye. Often combinations of these therapies are used and you should discuss the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis with a veterinary oncologist. Do to the individual nature of the cases, it is a field where there is little published outside of the specialist cancer journals, and they may have information not available to me. You should know that general anesthesia of the large cold bloods is more difficult and carries more risk than with smaller horses. DrO
