Posted on Tuesday, Jan 10, 2006 - 10:41 am: Hi ThereI have a 5 year old cross warmblood thoroughbred. He had a bad respiratory virus in June last year. It took about 6 weeks to clear up.On inspection, his nostrils appear narrower than usual, but whether that is of any relevance, I am not sure. Anyhow, since this virus cleared up he tends to make a strange groaning noise for about a minute and then sneezes when he is being worked. He does not do it at all in the stable or in the paddock, only when being ridden and even at a trot. He is exceptionally alert and full of beans and shows no reduced performance or distress whatsoever. However he does shake his head a little just prior to sneezing. He definitely does not cough, he sneezes. Any ideas? We oak his teff and he eats it off the floor of the stable and he is stabled on wood shavings. He spends most of the day out in a paddock which is not dusty or anything. His name is Ozmium or "Oz" for short and he is due to go to our "Horse of the year Show" in February and although this is not terribly bad, I wouldn't want it to detract from his performance in the show ring. Thanx Penny |

Posted on Saturday, Aug 2, 2008 - 8:08 am: Hello PennyI am interestd to read about your horses symptoms as regards the strange noise then the sneezing - has this carried on or now disappeared? My recently aquired horse also does this - most apparent for some reason when going downhill - he has a bacterial lung infection which he is having treatment for but these were the symptoms that I was first concerned about and sought vet advise. The vet however does not think these noises/sneezes relate to the lung infection and is not sure what they are about. The vet also says it will be difficult to find out how the bacteria and inflamation was initiated in the lungs and it could be that he had a virus before I got him or an allergy and only on starting on regular riding did this beome apparent. So your mention of an earlier virus has also made me think perhaps these noises/sneezes/virus are related after all. The noise he makes is sort of like a "clear the throat/nose noise" of ur hu - ur hu - ur hu then usually but not always a sneeeze. Does this sound anything like the symptoms your horse had/has? |
