When doing some research on "poor performance causes" I ran across some information on Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD). Is this another form of COPD or just very similiar? I was really intrigued by one article that is discussing a possible viral cause for the condition. www.petersonsmith.com/vetnotes/2001-10%20Inflammatory%20airway%20disease%20CTR.p df I have a 11 year old gelding that's been and under performer all his life. He's always gives three coughs when beginning exercise. Previous owners had him scoped and examined by several vets who reported that there was nothing wrong. (he is stalled, but is in a very airy barn by the large door and the barn has separate hay storage. I know, this is not the ideal (all barns are dusty) if he has COPD, but his only signs are 3 coughs and a lazy attitude. I've looked into hay cubes but right now alfalfa is the only thing I can find in my area. He's IR and I've read that most don't tolerate alfalfa). I'm hoping to have my vet do some testing next month and was doing some research to figure out what to ask about. I didn't see anything specific about IAD. It looks like the management practices would be the same. And until I ran across the article on a possible viral infection, I thought the disease was the same. Any thoughts on this? What would be an acceptable, workup for a nice gelding with a bright attitude (as long as you aren't asking for a strong trot). - Sandi

COPD is a form of IAD but there are other forms of IAD recognized and can be differentially diagnosed. For more on this check out both:
- Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Chronic Cough Without Fever
- Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Chronic Lower Airway Disease
