Hello Sandy, I remember the excitement when you told me the corticosteroids had helped your refractory stringhalt problem. The first step is to determine whether you are seeing lameness or stringhalt. It is not clear from your post, it sounds like your vet thinks lameness. Is he limping on a hind limb (hip hiking up during weight bearing) or is the leg pulling up sharply, they really do not look the same. The Advisor Vet, RN Oglesby DVM

I do not believe intrarticular corticosteroids would relieve Stringhalt, but would do wonders for painful (arthritic) hocks. I am not sure what surgery you are contemplating can you explain in greater detail? The Advisor Vet, RN Oglesby DVM

I've heard the theory that sometimes a secondary surgery is needed or might help with horse with residual stringhalt. The theory is that sometimes the surgeon does not take enough tendon or belly of the muscle out or the tendon somehow reconnects through scar tissue. Have you done or heard of any secondary stringhalt surgeries that clear up residual flexion of the hock? He had the original surgery about 2 years ago. I'm thinking about a secondary surgery since it it relatively simple and inexpensive
