A very old, established, famous horse farm here in central Kentucky still uses the technique of pin-firing it's 2 year olds in training on the farm. I personally think it barbaric and of no real benefit to the horse. What is your opinion?

Hi Stacy, I agree, I think it is totally barbaric ... but I was surprised (ok, shocked) to find out that counterirritation is an accepted method of treatment in certain situations ... and even is used for humans (e.g., cancer treatment). I just hope I never find myself in a situation where it is indicated ...

Stacy - I also think it is barbaric, that is absolutely the right word. And articles that I have, and fairly modern veterinary books, all say that in modern terms, it doesn't work - it is the rest that goes with it that heals. And even if it was proven to work, it is still barbaric, and in the year 2000, we should alternative pain-free methods of treatment. I nursed a horse who had been pin-fired at a stable that used to be next door to me where the owner was incapable of dealing with such things, and let me tell you, that horse was in enormous pain and it was a dreadful thing to heal. I hope never to see anything like that again.
