Discussion on Breeding after colic surgery

My 13 year old arabian stallion colic for the first time on april 2 and then again on april 12. He was tuped both times but didn't respond the second time. My vet recommended that I take him to a vet hospital nearby. After a day and a half he had gotten worse and had not passed any manure, they decided to do exploratory surgery. They found a 8-9 lb. enterolith which was jet black and the size of aprox. 2 softballs. They said that this was rare in Ohio that they are very common in CALF. but they had never seen one this color. My question is how soon after surgery can he be used for stud. The operating surgeon said 30 days. Someone else told me that his sperm may of been affected by the surgery an I may have to wait 120 days. I by no means want to rush him but I do have mares booked to him for this season and I need to let the mare owners of an aprox. time.

Hello William,
Some days you think you have seen all the questions a dozen times each and then out of the blue...

Assuming commonly used premeds and anesthesia was used, I know of no specific reason the sperm would have been adversely reacted during surgery. Fever would be a common cause of transient infertility. During anesthesia I suspect the scrotum and testicles lose some of their ability to thermoregulate, so if the sperm became excessively cooled....

Why don't you have a analysis of the sperm done at 30 days out and if everything looks OK, it would be an encouraging though not 100% sign of things being OK. To avoid legal intanglements and because it is the right thing to do, I would inform the mare owners of the circumstances and the results of the semen evaluation.

What about breeding a mare after surgery? I have a mare in the hospital right now that may have surgery to remove stones. Is it safe to breed a mare after this type of surgery? Also what is the usual recovery time after surgery?

I would wait at least 6 months to breed but this will vary considerably from case to case and surgeon to surgeon. Best to ask your surgeon. Also, some of yor qustions won't be able to be answered definatively till after surgery.
