Hi
I am new to horse advise, My 7 month old heavy coloured golt foal has a cough, I have recently taken him in off grass and put him in a stable, first he was on straw but now he is on shavings, I'd greatly appreciate any advice on how to treat it.

thanks a lot

Hey Sean
And welcome to a GREAT SITE, for those "old timers" as well as the youngsters!
As far as your question goes, I always rule out worms in a young foal with a cough before looking at other factors, such as a common cold or viral infection of some kind, as well as allergies which may be present(since you mentioned that he has recently been introduced to a stall)! He may have developed a roundworm infestation, (very common especially in young horses) which can migrate to the lungs and cause a couch. I'm telling you this because many first time owners see a cough and automatically treat a cough, when the cough is really secondary to worms! Not to worry, you can help him with wormers! There is an excellent article on worming the young foal on this site. DrO can guide you thru if you have any questions! Good luck, AND it sounds like you are going to be a great owner, as you are not going to let his cough become a really serious problem! Again, welcome ...

Hello and Welcom Sean,
Before starting the article on deworming step back and look at all the possible causes. See the article Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Chronic Cough Without Fever. It should give you some good ideas including how to tell if worms may be the problem.
