When my horse had his winter shoes removed and his show shoes placed, he was rather clumsy and one day he knicked his rear right leg (the skin just above the hoof)with his foreleg. It's just a small, round wound. This occurred in early January, 2006. Since then, I have been cleaning the wound with Betadine and then placing triple antibiotic ointment on the wound. However, the wound refuses to completely heal. The wound does not bleed and I can feel a crusty, bumpy substance (I think this is scab). This area is really hard to keep clean, as you might expect. Am I doing something wrong in managing his wound? If so, what should I be doing to heal this once and for all? Thank you! Lori

Hello Lori, I wonder if there maybe a foreign body in the wound? Also of concern is the horse reinjuring the spot. Lastly if proud flesh has formed it will slow down wound healing. You may want your vet come look at the wound to check the above. That said it is a peculiarity of "round" wounds can be slow to heal because of poor contraction. For more on the points above and how we would recommend you care for this wound see Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Wounds / Burns » Long Term Deep Wound Care. DrO
