Posted on Friday, Mar 3, 2006 - 1:49 pm: Dear Dr.OThis is a new one for me; today the horse care person came and told me that one of the blind horses had urine colic. He injected Lasix 20 in the intravenously and the horse peed after 5 mins. as expected. They say here that the first pee is normally thick; unfortunately I got distracted with the other horses and did not see when it came out! duh. Have you heard of this condition? What causes it? These horses were rented out before and the norm here is to have them tied up all day (Tacked up) and they get watered and fed morning and evening. Could this be the root of the problem? Sorry to be so vague but as I said this is a new one for me. Thank you in advance, Liliana |

So he then provided a diuretic with the end result being urination? As for the first pee being thick, When I have seen lasix given or when I have given it myself the urine was always diluted and clear with the first urine output post lasix. If you dont' mind my asking why do they say there that the urine will be thick after lasix? As I am curious. |

Many horses with abdominal pain will posture like they need to urinate, but it has nothing to do with the urinary system. Once they relax however they frequently urinate. I have seen urinary stones that make them look like they are colicky but those would not respond to Lasix, in fact the Lasix would make it worse if the stones are not removed. So I am uncertain what they are talking about Liliana and don't wonder if this is not a mild abdominal colic that they mistake for urinary problems that just happens to improve around the time the Lasix is given. All I know is that I got to Merlin some 30 mins., after I was informed that he had colic and he was on the ground did not look stressed at all simply laying down although his breathing was faster and his gums were white! The water here is very limy and sandy, perhaps that’s what causes this synDrOme. However when Henry arrived two years ago from a rental ranch, he had what seemed the same symptoms to the same caretaker, only he developed a high temperature the next day and although he wanted to drink it was like if he could not. Of course this was Sunday, no vets, no pharmacy, so in panic and with no other option y injected Butafenil which is Fenilbutazona and gave him an IV for 2 days and voile he was right as rain. Right now there is still almost no grass, so they are eating a mixture of all kinds of shrubs and flowers and you name it, sooo who knows what the heck it was but, he seems fine now. I guess like with Henry it could have been a number of things that just passed after a period of time! Another of life’s mysteries eh ATB Liliana |
