I purchased a horse that was used in barrel racing and had a injury to a leg, but was pronounced sound by a vet. when i got him home, he walks really stiff legged in front and when he stands he is picking up and shifting his legs a lot like they hurt? I asked the people i got him from and they acted like they were puzzled...when i take him out he is a little stiff in front and walks choppy, but after we get going he moves right along and doesnt seem to be bothered...any help on what to treat or look for will certainly be appreciated...the owners said to give him selenium shots as he tends to get muscle bound in his front shoulders when he is worked hard. he is a 16 yr old quarter horse. thanks. cherry

The description of the gait and shifting suggest a bilateral problem. The fact that he was just moved says it might have happened on the trip home, possibly problems with tying up or a mild founder. I suggest you have your vet out to look it over to make a diagnosis. We have articles on both of this conditions in the Diseases: Lameness section. The tying up would be under muscles problems the founder under foot problems.
