I have a 16 yo TB mix. He has a high white blood cell count and anemia. Just two days ago came down with the strangles. Could the strangles be causing the elevated white cell count? How about the anemia? I've got a vet out every three days giving him an IV of some sort of immune booster, has anyone heard of this immune booster? Also, he's lost a significant amount of weight very very quickly.

Yes the high WBC count is due to the Strangles but not the anemia. For more information on this see Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Strangles & Streptococcus equi. Concerning the immune booster see, Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Strangles & Streptococcus equi. DrO

Thanks so much, this Strangles sickness is just horrible.. My 14 yo TB has it now... My neighbor brought a TB stud in from Ca. about two weeks ago and he had this the first few days of arriving...

I just printed the information you provided. The bastard form is what has me scared. Everyone keeps telling me not to treat with penicillin, just let this run it's course. AND I've heard that horses only can get this once. I had the TB mix vaccinated last September but maybe it was too long ago...

With the approval of your veterinarian, follow the instructions carefully in our article. I have used these guidelines on hundreds of horses with strangles over several decades and have never had a case of bastard strangles form. DrO
