Hello Dr. O Scarlet 15hh was very lame about a year ago on the left hind leg, the hock was very swollen and she could hardly walk. I was told that she was kicked by one of the other monsters I mean horses. For some reason nobody likes her and they always chase her and bite her. We bandaged and gave her anti inflammatory drugs; I cannot cold hose as the weather is so hot that the water never comes cold! The swelling went down and she was sound after about a month and she was sound. However every 6 months or so she goes lame on the same leg for no apparent reason?! Any ideas! Thank you in advance Liliana

Hello Liliana, I suspect she has degenerative joint disease and maintains a low grade lameness that flares up ever so often. This is a common history for such a injury. A thorough exam and radiographs would be needed to confirm this. For ideas on therapy, if arthritis is the problem, see Equine Diseases » Lameness » Joint & Bone Diseases » Arthritis and DJD: An Overview. DrO

Thank you very much Dr. O This poor thing, she’s been so unlucky. She most have been involved in some sort of accident at some point as she has a scar on the near front hoof as if it had been sliced through. Apparently she was left to roam free in the mountains until she was three, and then caught to be sold on, as she’d never been shod, she was knocked on the floor while someone sat on her neck and twitched her ear, then a heavy sack was tied to her back , to break her in, as a result when someone got on her back she went over backwards. She is only five years old and she’s already ruined thanks to some idiotic forms of “training” used by some archaic people! Even though she is as nervous as a bird she is very sweet natured! It’s taken two years for her not to go up in the air if you happened to brush her ears with the head collar. Thank you very much again, I'll get on with my reading! Liliana
