Hello everyone My mare was diagnosed with EPSM last week and is already on her new diet and doing extremely well. Is it is ok to feed her apples and carrots? As I know it contains sugar. Thank you for all your help!!! Lea-Anne

1 oz? 1 lb? Once a day? 10 times a day? Such questions depend on how much you are going to give and how sensitive your horse is. It is unlikely a teaspoon of either once a day will cause problems. First get your horse 100% then you can add back small amounts of treats and evaluate the response. Better would be less sugary treats like alfalfa cubes. DrO

My mare can't have either of those. We do give her a bite of carrot from time to time, but it always makes her crib like crazy, which we think is a negative response. She gets Cracklin Oat Bran cereal, recommended by Dr Valentine, and she loves them and they are easy to keep and they don't make her sick. Alicia

I am puzzled why Cracklin Oat Bran is o.k. because it has a lot of sugar.

I agree with Dr O. I have had my boy on his new diet for about a year now. Only a couple months ago I started giving him small handfuls of a senior feed I had for my old mare. I am glad your horse is doing so well but depending on how severe their condition, it could take awhile to figure out the details. I would say no carbs of any kind for at least 4-6 months. They have to retrain their body to burn the fat instead of the carbs for energy, and I would think carbs of any kind would just slow down the process. When I give my boy his hand full of senior feed he licks his lips and chew for almost 1/2 hour! He has learned to savor every bit.

My gelding has EPSM and to make his daily oil meal more edible, he always gets a couple of carrots chopped in. It hasnt seemed to cause any issues in the last 3.5 yrs. Having said that I wouldnt feed a large amount of anything that had a high sugar content.
