Discussion on MARE SHOWS STRONGER HEAT ON POOR CYCLE | |

Posted on Saturday, May 20, 2000 - 11:16 pm: I HAVE A 6 YR OLD MARE W/MID MARCH FOAL AT SIDE. I TRIED TO BREED ON FOAL HEAT W/OUT SUCCESS AS SHES NOT IN FOAL YET. SHE DID SHOW HEAT ON WHAT APPEARED TO BE NORMAL HEAT CYCLE. WE ARE USING COOLED SHIP SEMIN WHICH ON DELIVERY IS CLEAN AND MOTILE. THE VET CHECKED FOR FOAL AT 21 DAYS AND APPEARED TO BE IN FOAL BUT I CALLED CAUSE SHE ACTED IN HEAT THOUGH NOT STRONG. WELL AT 43 DAYS SHE WAS PALP. AND OPEN. VET SAID FOLLICAL FORMING ON RIGHT SIDE SO WE ORDER SEMIN FOR DATE AND HE FELT LIKE SHE OVULATED ALREADY THOUGH I DONT THINK SO. 2 DAYS LATER SHE SHOWS VERY HOT TO ANYTHTING. SO I CALL VET HE CHECKS AND SAYS YES EGG ON RIGHT SIDE. WE ULTRA SOUND 2 DAYS LATER AND GET 35MM THAT LOOKS W/IN 48HRS OF OV, SO WE ORDER FOR NEXT DAY. NOW ON RIGHT SIDE WE HAVE A 10MM AND TWO 21'S ON LEFTSIDE AND STILL SHOWS HEAT TO THE FAMILY DOG. FRUSTRATED AND TIRED OF SPENDING MONEY WILL SHE OVULATE ON THIS CYCLE AND WHAT IS GOING ON. I DONT THINK WE HAVE AN INFECTION. IN SUMMERY SHE IS SHOWING STRONGER HEAT THAN EVER IN HER LIFE BUT HAS FOLLICAL THAT DONT DEVELOPE. VET THINKS SHE IS FORMING THEM AND THEY ARE REGRESSING AND GROWING NEW. WE DONT FIND INFECTION. THANKS FOR ANY IDEAS, TIM |

Posted on Sunday, May 21, 2000 - 10:27 am: Tim,Please learn to use your small letter keys. Reading an all CAP post is a challenge. Let see, you have bred her twice without catching and now she has been in heat for an indeterminate time, a probable ovulation, and still in heat but I can't tell how much time later from the post. On top of that you indicate you don't think the vet has it right? There is just enough information here for me to have not a clue what might be happening. Mares, in rare cases, can be very irregular and vet's can make mistakes, I don't know which you have here. If it is the former a 14 day course of Regumate frequently straightens the cycle out. DrO |

Posted on Sunday, May 21, 2000 - 1:43 pm: I posted a response earlier but im not sure it uploaded. If not, let me rephrase w/time table. The vet palp for preg check and found no foal at 43 days. He did find a follicle forming and thru palp predicted ovulation. We ordered semen according to prediction but found only a depression where egg was. No ultrasound done at this time, regretfully. We bred anyway w/outside chance ovulation was w/in 6-8 hrs. This is Monday. Wednesday morning mare is showing very strong heat, she showed none before breeding. Vet comes out in evening of same day and says we have follicle forming on right horn. We ultrasound on Fri and do full exam. He is puzzled, we have a well forming 35mm that is getting soft. As it is weekend we order semen for Sat. On Sat late morning she is still red hot but right egg is down to a 10mm and left horn has two 21's. We had semen so we bred as throw away. Now Sunday morn she is still red hot and vet is comming back on Monday, seven days from our breeding attempt. At this point he isnt completely clear what we are dealing with. It is late enough in season im not sure to re-breed after 14 days of regumate. My question is can this cycle produce a good egg or what is your opinion. I hope I have supplied enough info. It is difficult to fully explain all details. Thankyou for any takes you have. |

Posted on Monday, May 22, 2000 - 8:49 am: Yes this cycle can produce a fertile egg and I don't really think it likely that the 35mm follicle went to 10, ovulation and the growth of a 10 is far more likely. Watch for the development of the CL on the ultrasound over the next 5 days. She may have a double ovulation and I would recommend you breed any healthy looking follicle that reaches 33 to 35 mm and breed it every other day until it ovulates.DrO |

Posted on Monday, May 22, 2000 - 10:00 pm: I hope this isnt a response youve recieved but I cant tell if you have. To follow up we ultra this morn. and found the two 21's on left horn are now a 31mm. My vet also contacted a vet who speacializes in horse repro and was in agreement w/you that the 34MM prob was an OV. She recommended two treatments oxytocin today to aid in Sat. breeding of which Im glad we did. My vet explained what we had and she(speacialist) felt she might be bred. The mare didnt tease well Sun. night and today she was aggresive to teasing horse. My question now is do you think the 31mm will OV even though she acts cold, my vet is set to come Wed. morn. to see what she is doing. Also the stallion owner recommends regumate, but wont that eliminate a potential OV? |

Posted on Tuesday, May 23, 2000 - 6:51 am: The change is behavior is more evidence of ovulation: the CL produces progesterone that makes her act cold (diestrus). It might ovulate, diestral ovulations are not that uncommon but there is no since in breeding a diestral ovulation as the cervix is closed and manipulation of the cervix at this time might result in aborting the developing embryo.DrO |
