Discussion on Pedal Osteitis & Hoof confirmation
Author Message

Posted on Tuesday, May 30, 2000 - 8:53 am:

My 6 yr old TB has been off & on lame in his left front leg for several weeks now. We first thought abcess, but after regular soaking there was no change. I've been riding him fairly lightly since then. His lameness seems to show up after a good rain and in the mornings. I had radiographs taken yesterday (so don't know results yet), but my vet and farrier mentioned PO. My horse's front feet are very dished with a low heel and my vet suggested we trim the front of the hoof as far back as we can and try to put the pressure on the outside of his hooves (does this sound right?). My question is, is PO more likely to be found in horses with poor hoof confirmation? Also, if the radiographs do show PO, will I still be able to work him as before?
I jump him, but nothing really high (we haven't even hit 3' yet). I'm concerned about his long-term prognosis, but after reading other postings, I guess each horse is different.

Hello Jennifer,
We cannot answer your question from the few details you give. However PO is discussed in detail in the article on Pedal Osteitis associated with this forum. Just click on the link above to Pedal Osteitis then click on the the title.
