Discussion on Check Ligament Surgery | |

Posted on Tuesday, Apr 20, 1999 - 6:40 pm: My 2 year old Arabian Filly just had her check ligaments severed. The vet recommended this because she was too upright. The surgery was performed 1 month ago and I have begun to walk her for 15 minutes each day as directed by my vet. I have noticed however that she trips about 20 times in this 15 minute time frame and that she continues to stand with her front legs knuckeling over. Is this normal? As time goes on and she stops growing will her legs become stronger? It seems as if she has very weak pasterns. Right now she is eating only alfalfa hay 2x day. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 21, 1999 - 11:21 am: It was both - she is still swollen at the site of the superior ligaments - and the stiches at the site of the inferior where removed 6 days ago |

Posted on Tuesday, Apr 27, 1999 - 8:08 am: Hello Marse,Thanks for shaking my cage. I was looking for reports of where both ligaments were severed, I have not done that myself, and was unable to. So I am not sure what to expect as normal post op. These surgeries done individually have few complications. It could be that until the swelling subsides that flexion is inhibited or painful resulting in the symptoms you see. I would reserve judgement at least until then. And like your post suggests, further problems may resolve with increasing strength, you will have to wait and see. DrO |

Posted on Thursday, Jan 27, 2000 - 12:09 pm: My 16.2 14 year old dutch warmblood mare has a damaged check ligament in her near fore, below the knee. I would like to know more about this, treatment, prognosis etc. She is being scanned tomorrow but I am keen to find something out before then. |

Posted on Friday, Jan 28, 2000 - 3:03 pm: Hello Anne,Well I did not see your post until today, so I suspect you already have been scanned. Why don't you give us a history, the results of physical exam, and the results of the scan and then ask any specific questions you might have. Instead of posting your question at the bottom of someone elses discussion you should create your own. You will get more responses and it helps others find related information better. This is the appropriate topic for your subject, so just back up to your topic using the navigation bar at the top of this page and select: New Discussions. Choose a title that is descriptive. Thank You, DrO |
