Hello Patricia: I am sure Dr. O will respond to your question. I would suggest you read his article on shin splints and it tells about the medical treatment procedures. To my knowledge splints are not treated with surgery. Rest is the most important thing for the horse. As Dr. O's article states an old cold splint in an otherwise sound horse is nothing to worry about. Hope this information helps. Dr. Woodworth

Thanks for the help Dr.W,
Patricia, certainly read the article on splints as a starting point. Surgery is almost never necassary.

I assume we are talking about an inflammatory episode of the splint bone resulting in swelling, and if acute, heat and pain, and not a "bucked shin" which is much closer to the human disease known as shin splints.

Dear Dr.O,
thankyou for your reply. I was referring to an old injury to the shin bones, which cause a visable lump on the legs. Can they be removed surgically to restore the perfect look to the legs?

Not usually Pat, unless they are very large they will come back just as before.
