Discussion on Fertility of a young stallion

Is there any research on the increase of fertility
in young stallions as they grow older?

My friend is trying get her 7 yo maiden mare bred
by her 2 year old stud. They are turned loose in
the pasture togather 24/7. The mare is not very
visible in her heats but has been breed by him
twice for sure yet she still remains open per the
vet. She was given a shot to bring her in to heat
but nothing happened. The stud colt walks the walk
and talks the talk but nothing is happening. I
think he is just too young yet but my freind is
getting worried that one of them has fertility
problem.

Hello Emily,
This is quite variable but measured by the number of covers required to get mares pregnant, generally stallions at 24 months are about half as potent as they will be at 36 months. Most start really coming into there own after the 27th month.

Thanks Dr O, Hopefully she'll have better luck
next year with this pair, especially since she is
already building her brood mare band around him...
