  Discussion on Absorption vs abortion

Hi:
My 10 year old mare was bred (AI) and confirmed pregnancy by ultrasound on Wednesday (day 26 post insemination). My question is that today she seemed colicy....stand up, lie down, up, down, and reluctant to move around. Her temp is normal, her heart rate was upper 40's, good bowel sounds in all 4 quadrants. I talked with a vet on the phone, and by the time our conversation ended, my mare was back to her old self....grazing and moving about. I'm not certain if it had been going on during the day, because I had just returned home. The vet mentioned possible abortion vs. colic episode, just by the description. She had no discharge visible, and what I was wondering is when does "absorption" end and "abortion" begin? Is there a timeframe? When she was ultrasounded 2 days ago, she had a 42mm vesicle. I'll be bringing her back for a repeat ultrasound in a couple weeks, but this absorption vs. abortion has me curious. Just wondering if there's any rule of thumb, or anything further I should be watching for.

Thanks,
Lynn

No rule of thumb I am afraid, rechecking in a week or two makes sense to me.
