My mule had a bad case of thrush in her front left foot which we treated with betadine and epsom soaks, plus antibiotics from the vet. Still she had periods of lameness. We took her to a different vet who immediately diagnosed her with thrush in BOTH front feet. He said at this point that antibiotics would be useless as the infection was high up in the hoof and near the point where the flesh turns into hoof. He recommended a 100% bleach rinse two times a day and keeping her feet dry. This was two weeks ago and we've been keeping her in the barn, picking and cleaning her feet and keeping dry bedding. She seems to be less sore and we'd like to trail ride next weekend. Is there a solution for sealing off the hoof so no moisture can get in, or something we can pack the hoof with to keep dirt and moisture out while on the trail? The vet says it may take all summer and keeping her feet clean and dry to clear this up, and constant vigilance thereafter to prevent a reoccurrence. We never had thrush in our barn before and we've had horses for many years. The vet says she may have had it before and is now prone to re-infections. Thanks!

If ground pressure on exposed sensitive tissue is the cause of the lameness you could try temporarily putting a thin pad under the shoe to protect the foot. However you will need to remove it the second you get back home to continue treating the foot. DrO
