I have a Rocky Mtn horse whose shoulder gets sore from gaiting. I have had his shoulder injected with cortisone 3 times in the past year. Now, 4 months after the last injection, the soreness is back. I don't want to inject him anymore. What other therapies are available. My vet says don't gait him but that doesn't make sense to me. Thanks. Helen S.

Welcome to posting Helen, As a rider and owner of many gaited horses I agree, "that don't make no sense". First how do you know you have shoulder problems? And if you have proof what is the exact nature of the problem? DrO

Hi Helen, All I know is what I read (on the web). I have a Rocky Mountain Horse gelding who would prefer to trot rather than gait. Anyway, what I have read on gaited websites is that the Rocky Mountain horses usually rack. The rack forces the horse into a vetroflexed frame, and that can be hard if done excessively. However, the problems mentioned are usually with the back and hind end, rather than the shoulders. I am going to a clinic next week, and hope to learn more about the correct way for gaiting a Rocky Mountain horse. Good luck with finding out what bothers your horse, Lilo
