My foal is a month old and losing hair around her face and parts of her chest and neck down to the bare skin. Could this be that she is allergic to some thing in the pasture or do foals lose baby hair like this some time .

Is there fine hair growing into the bare spots? Foals do shed their baby hair -several times, actually. It often makes a foal look pretty "patchy" until the new haircoat is in. Usually, the hair coming in is a different color than the baby hair.

btw - I once had an old breeder tell me that a foal has to shed 3 times before you know it's true color.

Hello Karen,
Allergy is not a common cause of hair loss in horses. Ways to differentiate regular hair loss from diseases is explained at, Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Overview of Hair Loss & Irritated Skin.

I read an article once about how some horses shed out and are bald underneath for awhile. The article said that usually the new hair growing in signals the body to shed the old hair, but that occasionally the old hair will fall out before the new hair has started to grow in.

The new hair appears a week or two later.

I have had this happen on a few foals. Mostly a bare chest.

My filly is almost 6 weeks and is doing the same thing, it's probably the baby hair shedding.
