Dear Dr. O,

I have been trying to find out the reason why prednisolone is favored over prednisone. Does it have to do with a horses metabolism/liver?

Quite a few people have looked at me sideways when it is mentioned that my horse was on prednisolone, and then I can't give them the rationale for why this is preferred over prednisone. In the HA article on clenbuterol/bronchodilators, prednisone is actually listed as the drug of choice.

One last question- is there a limit on how much Dexamethasone to give? The HA article goes by weight based dosing- which makes sense-yet the vets in my area say no more than 40 mg once a day.

Thank you.

Hello Cher this phenomenea is explained in the scientific report section of Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Anti-inflammatories (NSAID's, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) » Prednisone, Prednisolone, Methylpred. I do not know any reason why 40 mg should be a maximum dose. You should also review the overview of steroid article on the same menu as the the two articles above.
