Hello there,

I have a 14 year old TB mare whom has progressively become quite a hussy over the past several months. She is infatuated with many geldings and when they come near she screams and strikes out at them. She almost seems at times to be in perpetual heat with mareish behavior. I can tell when she is undeniably in season (winking and discharge). However, I have also noticed that she always been very touchy about having her right flank brushed or touched, even with the softest brush- her response is pinned ears and kicking out when touched there and seems to have become more sensitive over time.

I wondered if this is an indication of GCT or a cyst and if you have seen other mares with this type of sensitivity and if there is a correlation. I am at my wits end with her. she is becoming more tempermental.

I am going to ask my vet to run hormone tests and ultrasound to see if this will uncover anything. We have tried the marble "IUD" implant to no avail. Any feedback is appreciated.

Hmmm....mares. My QH/TB cross was treated for ulcers last March. She had been "girthy" and hated touching in the area you describe. She is no longer "girthy", is happy to be brushed anywhere, and is no longer "mareish" and bad tempered with the other horses.
