Hi, Dr.O. I think my horses have lice, I have been finding egg like things in their manes, forelocks, and tails, nowhere else tho. I wormed them with ivermectin 5 days ago and that is when I started noticing them. I took a sample to the vet to confirm they are lice and they will get back to me tomorrow. In the mean time I have removed all bedding and dusted their lean to and the horses. Question is where could these have come from? Can horses get lice from cattle? Also a friend brought her horse here in April, however we gave him the once over + wormed him with ivermectin before he got here, he seemed clean, and is well taken care of. My husbands cattle and someone elses cattle on the other side of the fence have had problems with lice. I always thought lice were breed specific, but after searching on the net it seems some do jump species. Anyway 2 questions, they were wormed 5 days ago, so I should worm them again in a week? (ivermec). My friends horse now will not let his right ear be touched, he was fine before, and I am certain it is not a training problem as he is older and very mellow, the left ear is fine. Can lice get in the ear canal? Thanks

Hello Diane, Lice are usually not an ear problem. The article associated with this discussion answers your other questions , explains about lice their life cycle, and proper treatment. DrO

Thanks Dr.O. Just wondering if you have ever heard of horses getting lice from cattle, or is it not possible? The article says they are breed specific, but are there exceptions? Thanks

Thanks Dr.O. Vet called and said it wasn't lice! He said he thought it was oily balls of skin as they disappaited if he held them between his fingers. Neither of us has seen anything like it, but I am very glad it isn't lice. have you ever seen this? the horses manes and forelocks are covered in it. They are also groomed daily. Thanks
