Posted on Tuesday, Jun 13, 2006 - 10:17 pm: Dr O. A month ago one of the thoro mares at my farm was at a show being walked to closely behind another horse, and she was kicked in the knee.., upper inside. THe mare was cold hosed and poulticed for several weeks, before the owner decided to get some radiographs to rule out a fracture. lameness was present with a slight head bob. No fracture but the bone was very bruised and inflamed. She advised to continue with the cold hose and poultice. The mare 2 weeks later is still off and there is still heat. Rule of thumb is if its hot, cool it off. But after this length of time we are thinking should she be stall rested and maybe switched to dmso/cortizone for treatment/therapy. Originally the Vet said turnout in the indoor. Any recommendations? If there is still some heat would the dmso increase the swelling? |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 15, 2009 - 5:06 pm: Dear Dr. O -Four weeks ago my horse fell lame after a particularly energetic turnout. After ultrasounds, injections and blocking of both the fetlock and pastern, there was still no diagnosis. The vet said that he saw a bone chip in the pastern area and some arthritic changes in the joint since our pre-purchase vetting last July. We sent her down to University of Illinois where she had an MRI yesterday. The vet there tells us that it is a bad bone bruise and that the chip does not seem to be interfering with the joint. My vet is suggesting shock wave therapy with another 60-90 days of stall rest, and perhaps using I-Wrap (sp?). What are your thoughts on this? Also, I purchased some OCD (Optimal Cartilage Development) formula to be added to her feed. Do you have any experience with this product? Thank you - Cory |

I have been using them for two plus years on a variety of horses that have had a variety of bone problems and also as a preventative measure in my young horses. At one point I had a mare that needed to be injected with Hylauronic acid every six weeks just to keep her going ( I do not like doing this) I put her on OCD pellets and did not have to inject her again. My young horses have not had the same amount of problems that most other young horses have and both are currently racing. I had a twelve year old with a very bad ankle that was maintained on OCD pellets. I highly recommend this product. I wish I could do a double blind study on the effectiveness of this product, so the results of what I have seen could be supported. Rachelle |

Instead of posting in Judy's discussion you should start your own so their is no confusion and you can get more responses. As this is a pastern problem I recommend you start it under: Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Lower Limb » Overview of Diseases of the Pastern. Be sure to review the article as it covers some of the issues you ask about. However non-articular bone chips is not covered so at the bottom of the article you will find a list of discussions and at the bottom the "Start New Discussion" button. I look forward to discussing your case. DrO |

Posted on Friday, May 1, 2009 - 12:39 am: Rachelle - Thanks for your input. I have put the mare on OCD and she has currently undergone one IRAP treatment, with Tildren on order. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I have the same good experience with OCD that you have had. In fact, I just ordered more...just in case. - Cory |
