Discussion on Urticaria in mare placed on sulfanimide for post partum infection
Author Message

Our mare had her first foal a week ago, standing, rapid, with some minor tears to her vagina. After having the discharge worsen after an antibiotic douche, the douche was repeated, and she was placed on a sulfanimide. Tolerated well for two days, and then urticaria appaered.

We took her off the medication yesterday, and some of the hives have improved, but some have worsened, especially on the left side of her neck.

Since she is nursing a week-old foal, our options are likely limited, but we'd like to know what should be done next...

Hello Norman,
Your next step would depend on the results of a good physical exam and a visual exam of the wounds in the vagina. Abnormalities found need to be diagnosed and treated.

Typically hives are treated with cortisteroids but considering the injuries and the usual condition of a post partum uterus I would not use them. By themselves hives are self limiting and in time will go away, but be sure you are not having any systemic disease concurrently. Cold water run over the body for 10 to 20 minutes will relieve some of the symptoms associated with hives.
