We are also using Ocufen for imflamation.Do you have any comments on these 2 drugs for UV and glaucoma? My pony is blind in the eye and his pupil is always dilated. When his eye gets bulgy and cloudy (sore but not tearing) using a gram of bute seems to help, but this time the vet saw protein particles (?) and prescribed the topical steriod for 10 days i didn't start to see any improvement until I started the bute on day 5 (improvement on day 7) and his eye looked the best a couple of days after weaning off the steriod on going back on the ocufen. Do you think this was more of a worsening of his glaucoma than his UV? Thank you for you comments, Kim |

Posted on Wednesday, Jul 26, 2000 - 10:39 am: No I don't know how it compares and may be a bit controversial. In other species atropine is contraindicated in glaucoma, but my local veterinary opthamologist says that horses with inflammation have a different response for unknown reasons, and may get some relief. If the eye is already dialated I do not think you will see much response. It is difficult for me to judge as I have an identical case right now and we are still trying to decide which is primary the inflammation or the glaucoma. Both me and the opthamologist believed the inflammation was but even very aggressive antiinflammatory treatment only helps a little, I am beginnig to believe the glaucoma is.DrO |

Foxy has had another episode, this time I went to the topical steroid as I had some left. The eye is no longer cloudy but looks much bulgier. Both flares seem to have been caused by dirt in the eye (if he rolls with the eye mask on-dirt gets through and stays near the eye). My worry is the other eye also looks bulgy-of course this is all subjective and as I would have to ship him to Tufts for an ophthalmologist to see him to know for sure. Our vet had mentioned another drug for glaucoma but after talking with Tufts said it needed careful administration as it could decrease the pressure too much causing other problems.I don't remember the name off the top of my head.Kim |
