I have a healthy 3 year old mare. I bred her on two heat cycles live cover to a fertile 5 year old stallion and she never settled in November and December. She was hauled from Kansas City to middle Louisiana for these breedings and returned back to Kansas City in early December. I bred her again on 3 cycles using AI starting in May. She had follicles exceeding 4.3 cm each time and was given HCG intravenously. She cycled again and we repeated it a second and a third time. She was cultured and a cytology was done with negative results. I raised this mare and she has never had any health problems and I am very discouraged because she is an exceptional mare and I wanted a foal from this stallion out of her. My vet bills for all this testing and rebreeding is out of sight. What else can I do to get her in foal. She will be sold as a riding horse if I can't breed her.

Hello Elsie, There are so many factors involved I cannot even begin to start. You must become familiar with what is normal and what can go wrong with settling mares. Only then can you have any hope of trying to figure what might not be working right. Study the article on breeding then study the articles on Trouble Settling Mares. Then develop a plan for exploring your problem and getting the mare bred. I would recommend you use natural cover from a prover stallion next time. It is very hard to settle mares after Oct and before Apr: ovulation even when a mare is cycling is irregular. DrO
