Discussion on Inhibin and Granulosa Cell Tumors

Posted on Sunday, Aug 20, 2000 - 8:18 pm:

Will a normal inhibin (sp?) test rule out a GCT?

My mare was normal on that test (UC Davis) but progesterone was not tested. Colorado State also does the testing.

My mare has similar symptoms. One ovary was enlarged and tender upon palpation (sp?)but the local vet did not ultrasound her.

ReguMate works but I hate to use it. I think ReguMate is progesterone so my mare must have a different problem.

Good Luck,
Pam N.

We are not sure. The idea of using inhibin to id GCT's is pretty new and early work on a small number of cases (6) shows it to be a very useful tool. However, GCT's are known for their wide varying endocrinolgical behavior: I would be surprised if ALL GCT's had abnormal inhibin levels but it does look like most maybe even the vast majority do.
