Dr. O: We have had some very spring-like days during the past few weeks. I have recently noticed many, many marble-sized holes in my horse pasture. These holes are in the grass but have mounds of fresh dirt around them. I thought I may have seen a "bee-like" insect fly out of one. I'm thinking this is bots, however we have our horses on a regular worming schedule (rotation 1 and 2). Should I be concerned, and if so, what should I do? Thanks for your reply. Lauren

There are many insects that burrow so I am uncertain you have a problem: did the horses on this pasture get dewormed for bots over the winter? Is so those should not be bots. DrO

Up here in NE Ohio we have what we call Land Crabs (they look like craw fish) that tunnel up through the ground and leave this mound of dirt around the hole like you describe. They usually come out at night so you don't see them during the day. Frequently you'll see the racoons have been busy digging out these holes to get the crabs. Yes, the bees do some times take advantage of these holes but I've never seen bots in relation to these holes, just hornets.

In reference to previous message: the horses on this pasture did get dewormed for bots over the winter, however in the late summer/early fall we had a couple of visiting horses in that pasture that were not on a regular deworming schedule. Could the visiting horses have DrOpped bots last fall and we're just now seeing these holes in the pasture?

Here in the NW we have been inundated with wasps for the past 3 years due to mild winter. I stumbled on to the fact that the little buggers go underground to survive the cold. I would bet that you are seeing these and that is what those holes are. If you can, get some wasp spray and dig down into one of these areas and see if there isn't a nest. If there is, zap them and put some in any holes you find. You might get the jump on them. EO
