Discussion on Reswelling of old splint
Author Message

What causes an old splint to swell up again? In my case, it is not overexertion as my horse has been laid up for weeks with other problems (in the front end - the splint is on a rear leg). Is the treatment the same as for a new splint?

I forgot to add that the swelling is happening only on the old splint itself, not surrounding areas. When pressed, it feels quite full of fluid. The horse is also on finishing up a run of a sulfa antibiotic right now - could there be any connection?

My guess would be the splint got struck. Treatment would depends on how badly hit it was. It certainly should be rested as long as there is heat and swelling.
