I've been aggressively treating a horse with Maleseb ... shampoo and at times, the concentrated rinse. I am also using Chlorohexiderm in between. The horse is not responding to this treatment and the conditions continues to worsen. First, round black areas about the size of one-half of the little fingernail appear. Soon, the hair falls out in patches ranging from dime size to silver dollar size. He is especially itchy on the neck and chest but hair loss has progressed through the flanks and buttocks. I recently heard about multi-florina (not sure of spelling) as a possible cause. Comments or other ideas?

Could you provide some photographs? That might be helpful. One of my mares started this 24 hours following Ft Dodge 5 way + WNV. She had an autoimmune reaction to the carrier in the vaccination. She was diagnosed with pemphigus foliaceus. Vets have two treatments - gold salt injections (nice for liver damage) or cortiosteroids shots (laminitis is common with use of these). I researched online and found 4LIFE - transfer factor stress and performance and show formula. This has really worked! She is doing very well - you would not know anything was wrong with her! I track her platlets also - if I decease her stress formula her blood work shows a DrOp in the platlet levels. It is very delicate but she is responding very well. She delivered a healthy beautiful filly! Phemphigus often breaks following the use of ivermectrin dewormer. It is very rare but happens. jj

Thanks Jane. I'm in the middle of moving so I don't know where my camera is. However, I did take a couple of photos with my phone. I'll see how those look and if possible post.

Sherry, I too am uncertain what multi-florina is but what you describe sounds like dermatophillus. It may be that it has a jump on you and these areas infected before you began treatment, if so it will just take time for more see, Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Rain Rot and Rain Scald: Dermatophillus. Actually, the condition I am wondering about is microfilaria. I've never had a dog with heartworms so this was new to me ... hence, the butchering of the name. I have read the posts on this site and continue to think it might be a possibility. Tests have been run so we'll know something soon.

The common microfilaria of horses is called onchocerca and you will find an article on this at, Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Onchocerciasis Dermatitis. Note with the regular use of avermectin based dewormers this cause of skin disease has all but disappeared, see the article for more on this. DrO
