Dear Dr O,
My horses are out on extremely long lush pasture for 4 hours a day.Yesterday they came back into the barn and one mare's eye was swollen shut. I rinsed the outer eyelid off and applied crushed ice to reduce the swelling enough to check the eye itself which appears fine. Today a second mare has an eye swollen shut. The bottom lid on both mares looks like it was infused with about 50 cc of fluid. While walking through the pasture yesterday I felt a sharp little sting on the back of my hand but saw nothing there. Today it is swollen ,looking fluid filled and I can see a tiny sting spot. It itches intermittently as does the eye of the first mare.I have a call into my vet but she has not yet responded. Another vet prescribed four days of oral Dex and SWAT cream to be applied locally but it contains Pyrethrins at .20% and I am wary of it injuring the eyes. My doctor once gave me a tiny tube of steroid cream for a spider bite that itched for 2 weeks and it worked with just two applications. I could get a tube from him for my mares if it is safe to use around the eye area. Is it? I am worried that they will injure the eye itself by trying to scratch on posts and trees. Is there anything safer to use to relieve the itching immediately.

The steroid is safe Yvette, but the carrier might be irritating, you could check with the doctor who prescribes it for better advice.

Yvette,

Do you have fly masks on? My horse has had his eye lid stung many times. The fly mask really helps, although occasionally he will get stung under the mask.

I have had him come in with a swollen eye 3 and 4 days in a row. Most of the time it goes away pretty quickly.
