  Discussion on Arab foal seizures

Our 2-month old Arab colt has been diagnosed with benign epilepsy or idiopathic seizure disorder. The symptoms are the same as in Dr. Oglevy's article. Phenobarbitol is controlling the seizures. We would appreciate any further information on the disease and whether or not it is familial/genetic. Our understanding is that it is most prevalent in Egyptian or Egyptian related horses. This is an exceptional colt of stallion quality. Is this a disease that merits gelding our colt?

Hello Onica,
Your question about the genetics has not been well studied so the answer is: we do not know. However since Arabs are greatly over represented with this disease it strongly suggests that this is a hereditable component so breeding these horses should be avoided, with what we know at this time. I have gone back and checked the recent literature and there is nothing changed or new that I can find to add. If I find it I will post it is the article.
