My 7 year old maiden Arabian mare was bred April 20 & 23. I had her vet checked in mid-June. He did an ultrasound and after seeing nothing, he palpated her. He found no fetus, nor felt any problems, but she has not really come back into heat. She had a problem with cycling frequently prior to breeding her. She has show only minor signs of heat one day since breeding. Is it possible that she is still bred or is she just not going to come back in this year? Any suggestions? Should I have her checked again towards the end of the year?

Now just back that mare up against the screen of your computer and put a twitch on her....good hold still....Yes it is possible: 1) she could be still bred or 2) she has just not returned to heat following the abortion. But I would have her checked again to be sure. If she is not cycling properly we have a number of articles on normal cycling behavior and probles with mares and abnormal heats see, Equine Diseases: Reproductive Diseases: Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility: Abnormal Heat Cycles (Estrus) DrO

Thanks Dr. O. I backed her up, no twitch needed, just some good drugs (GRIN). I will read your articles and talk to my vet about checking her again. Thanks again, Patricia
