Discussion on Recurrent swelling of jaw and throatlatch
Author Message

We have a 13 year old warmblood mare who since a yearling has suffered large swellings along her jaw and into the throatlatch area. She suffers from this several times a year. With each bout it seems to get larger and takes more time to recover. Blood work and a biopsy are inconclusive. The general concensus is a ruptured salivary gland. Our vet says this is more commen in dogs. Draining the area has been attempted however scar tissue limits the amount of fluid recovered. Has anyone had this problem and could you sugest a treatment? Thank you in advance.

If the diagnosis is correct surgical correction or removal of the salivary gland would seem to be the only choice.
