I am from GB and have an advanced event horse that will hopefully being performing at Badminton Horse Trials next year (2001). However, he recently has been diagnosed with narcolepsy - (falls asleep, head touching ground whilst tied up - virtually falling over - and happens quite often for about 10 mins or so.) I know that there is a drug (form of speed) that can be given - I think this is mentioned in the narcolepsy article on this website - however this is illegal to be used in horses that compete at international level. Is there anything else that can be given to my horse to 'liven' it up so that these attacks dont take place?

Hello Naomi, There is no work in horses on alternative medications for narcolepsy. Recently there has been a flurry of activity in humans and the follwing drugs have shown promise: modafinil, clomipramine, and fluoxetine. Clomipramine has been used in horses to induce ejaculation in stading stallions at a rate of 2.2 mg/kg of body weight, IV was administered. I do not know if this medication would be considered illegal or might cause a positive test under the rules you compete. Under either of the two sets of rules provided by the AHSA any drug which acts on the CNS is forbidden. DrO
