Discussion on Why does her neck go clunk!
Author Message

I have a 9yo 1/4 arab 3/4 quarter horse mare who for the last few years or so goes clunk when she moves her neck but not all the time. The sound comes from around 4inchs above her wither. This does not seem to hurt her that i have noticed but may show in another way that i can't tell. I have concidered a chiro as i have seen their work before with the race horses and the results were good, but some things they do aroung the neck to manipulate; well, my nice sweet mare would flatten them! Any one have ideas what it might be and any long term effects it might have on her?

Neck that goes clunk: could be the nuchal ligament snapping in and out of its normal position. This usually happens just behind the poll and you can see a little snap as it happens. A subluxating cervical vertebrae? A horseback rider that has taken one too many falls and now hears things? This is a good one for your vet (or your neurologist) to look at.

Sorry,
Was not sure how to take it as i have had some VERY bad falls in my time resulting in spinal damage (but thats what you get for riding peoples problem horses for a living):-) and have copped some flack from friends and family at the time. Sorry built in paronoia!
Now im a desk jockey i suppose i should look at the funny side (like rolling for half a furlong like a tumble weed or falling off because a shark on the beach scared the horse, jockey pads are not designed for staying on when the horse goes sideways after you DrOp the stirrips!)HAHAHA OUCH!
Now im going to be doing it again when i retrain unsuccesful racehorses for a hacking life! yep too many knockes to the head!!! This is where i say ANYONE IN AUSTRALIA FROM TIME TO TIME I WILL HAVE THESE HORSES FOR SALE ALL SOUND AND WITH FULL HISTORY. BRED BY SOME OF THE BEST STUDS AND TRAINED BY SOME OF THE BEST TRAINERS. NOW THERES SOMETHING TO BRAG ABOUT AT PONY CLUB!!!!!!

Thanks DrO
For your wit, your knowledge, your patience and for putting up with my spelling!

Not only a bad joke but one where I stuck my foot in my mouth big time. Thanks for your understanding and I will put my ability to misspell up against anyone, anytime.
